Business Casual Attire

Business casual attire is the dress code that every business man or woman wants to be able to wear to work. Who really likes putting on a tie every morning? This dress code became known in the 1970’s because of the energy crisis, where the tie and jacket were not demanded by employers. Most employers didn’t require these pieces of normal business attire due to the recent raised thermostat temperatures set by the government.

Basics of proper business casual attire are fairly easy to understand. For the most part if you stick to these couple tips and adjust to your circumstances properly you will have no problem at all. First things first all pieces of attire should be in good condition. Your clothes should not have any sort of tear, rip, hole, or be fading in any way. Next is to make sure that your attire properly fits. You don’t want to wear baggy pants or skin tight pants. The same goes for shirts and blouses, not too tight or too loose. If necessary you might have to get your attire tailored to fit right. Probably the most important tip for business casual attire is to try and put an outfit together that will neatly and professionally present yourself to your employer. Depending on the circumstances and employer your business casual attire can be very different from other business casual attires.

So now we ask ourselves when is it ok to wear business casual attire? Some job fairs or large interviews require business casual attire. Most out of work gatherings such as classes or training sessions are also business casual. The best way to find this out is to ask. Make sure to read all information on an event before asking any questions.

Common pieces of attire for business casual are neatly pressed khaki pants (not cargo). Long sleeve button ups are appropriate for men and women. Neat polo shirts are acceptable when hot whether is an issue or more casual attire is is expected. In most cases sneakers are not appropriate attire. The proper type of shoe to wear would be some sort of leather shoe like boating shoes. Just like the shoes your belt should be made of leather also if possible.

The differences in business casual attire and smart casual attire are that there aren’t many. Smart casual attire is just a more sophisticated looking business casual. Most rules of business casual apply to smart casual.
